Bottom face ocean
Essentially, no one is certain of the things that lie at the bottom of the sea. The oceans deepest darkest deep depths have proven more challenging to reach than traveling to the moon. In all of human history, 12 people have reached the moon, while only three have reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean: the Challenger Deep. The deepest point- located within the Marina Trench, reaches nearly 10, meters deep - beyond the depths which light can reach.

Intrigued, you slowly kick your way closer and closer to this odd looking face. The pressure of the water gets heavier and heavier with each inch. But finally you come face-to-face with an ancient god. This is the discovery of a lifetime, equal to the expeditions that discovered King Tut in the golden age of British world exploration. The lost city of Heracleion was one of the most important trade centers in the Mediterranean before it was swept under the sea over 1, years ago.
Why we should care about the bottom of the ocean
For years, ripples at the surface of the Dead Sea hinted there was something mysterious going on beneath its salt-laden waters. But in a lake where accidentally swallowing the water while diving could lead to near-instant asphyxiation, no one was in a hurry to find out what it might be. This year, some intrepid divers changed that, stumbling onto a geological and biological treasure and capturing it on video. We'll get to that in just a moment.
But the sense of alarm fades as we move onto the next crisis in our hyper-connected, information-overloaded world. We have the opportunity to actually make a difference with how most of the planet is used and protected. In September, the United Nations begins negotiating a new treaty to address the high seas, the approximately 64 percent nearly two-thirds of the oceans that lie beyond national territories. This treaty will enhance UNCLOS, which was born during the Cold War and fails to keep up with the myriad of threats facing our oceans including illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, the scourge of plastic pollution, and the impacts of climate change. The recently aired Blue Planet 2 BBC series left a tremendous impact on the public, galvanizing efforts to ban plastic bags and even drinking straws.
