Movie Review: The People I’ve Slept With

I got tickets to watch three Vancouver Asian Film Festival movies and–are we surprised?–I watched only two of them. I didn’t watch Dim Sum Funeral but I’m quite confident that with its big cast of well-known Asian-American actors, it will turn up at the video store in the “International” section or, uhm, on the torrents sites….
White on Rice was quirky and quite memorable, but I take things literally, to the letter, so I don’t enjoy humour very much. I did, however, enjoy very much The People I’ve Slept With. NPY …

VAFF This Year

Each year, the “release” of the VAFF (Vancouver Asian Film Festival) schedule is like mini-Christmas to me as I peruse the highly manageable list of films screening over the four-day festival. Movie marathon into the new year

We are avoiding the great outdoor party and (free) concert, clubs, “dinner and a dance,” and crazy drivers/revelers this year by ringing in the new year watching movies.

Yes, we have rented movies to cover everyone’s palates.
Happy new year, everyone!

What a nutter movie

Crazy Hong Kong. I feel so politically incorrect writing about this 1993 movie of a South African man accidentally transported to Hong Kong and the culture shock that ensues.
Aside from horrifically bad ’90s script and acting on the part of the Chinese stars, I learned that N!xau carries his real name to the stage and that Crazy Hong Kong was the fourth in a series of movies juxtaposing tribal life against modern wonders. There must have been some uproar (amongst the subculture of people who have seen it) but the …

Half a movie

I got this movie, Saving Face, based on not much more than seeing it at the movie rentals store and being a sucker for AA (Asian-American) movies.
Except it wasn’t a typical AA movie, whatever “typical” means.
The girls are gorgeous with one girl who looks like a girl in my department and the other one looks like an Asian Katie Holmes. And they like each other. Another surprise is that half the movie is in Chinese (Mandarin) and I didn’t seem to get the subtitle track. =S The half of the …
