The One Where the Runner Goes Snowshoeing

So I can check off having gone to Mount Seymour–finally, after six years here–one of the three ski hills whose lights float above the city at night. My aunt brought me along on a snowshoeing/outdoors meet up because they decided to do an easy trail and it would be my first ever snowshoeing adventure.
Although my co-workers talk weekly about the past weekend’s snow activity-filled weekends, taking full advantage of Vancouver’s proximity to mountains, I don’t think I’ve gone on a snow activity in the past two or three years. As …

I missed the first Fitness World Groupon, thinking my local Fitness World had not gone Steve Nash, but got onto the second one that was even cheaper! The gym got the last laugh, of course, because I got convinced to sign on for 15 more months with an attractive back-to-school/corporate rate.
It just goes to show that my life goes in cycles. I’m back to haunting a gym and now reminisce that I’ve been a gym rat at two other periods of my life.

Back to regularly scheduled programming (i.e., the Olympics are over)

As only a few people may have noticed, my blog went down for over a month. A very cool plug-in I was using (YARPP) played very badly and my hosting shut down my database because of the absurd number of SQL queries the plug-in was making. But I’m back! And I wasn’t going to blog much in the past month anyways because I was too busy soaking up and getting roped into Olympic events going on in the city.
So, to ease back into blogging, I’ve compiled my personal top ten …

So, what happened here??

So… people who have subscribed to my RSS feed may not have noticed much but people who come directly to this page would have received an error for the past few weeks: rest assured, I had not let anyone visit during that time. You see, my mother just joined the cyberspacing population and I shut things down in a panic — for, to a close family member even the most mundane blog post is very interesting and TMI.
While I figure out the direction of this blog (hint: I’ve changed my …

Work it

Did you know that I quit ballroom dancing this year? With the UBC Dance Club, that is.
While the Club is a great value for students and very convenient for campus-goers, it is not so for the rest of us. NPY and I are reaching certain “age milestones” and feel less-than-hyper, not carefree, and staid compared to the fresh-faced undergrads who run and overrun the club.
(I’ve got my sights on Broadway Ballroom but keep forgetting to view that blessed webpage in IE where it will work.)
Apparently I’m allergic to paying $15+ …

This time last year

I had this niggling feeling that I was running more last year than I have been this year. So I went through my logs and dug up the first half of last June and I was right: 10 runs in the first 17 days of last June and a mere 8 in the same time this year. =S
My interpretation: I was so nervous about doing marathon clinic for the first time, I took to heart pre-training in order to be “hitting the ground running” on Week 1 of official training. …

Sweating Skating

Did you know that once upon a time I did something called synchronized skating? I didn’t either until recently, in fact, because I didn’t call it by that name. It was merely known as that “embarassing blip” where twenty awkward and pre-pubescent girls uniformly, obliviously, and giddily clad in unflattering head-to-toe skin-skimming red polyester jumpsuits, claw-shaped mittens, and red hairbands. We performed a routine often involving us shimmying, forming chains and high-kicking like bad showgirls or gliding across the ice lined up a la Locomotion, all to that “Under the …

Out of Alignment

Ever since my chiropractic assessment last week, I have been feeling out of sorts. I’ve been feeling so self-conscious of being (minorly) crooked and, literally, bent out of shape.
The Sun Run is in less than three weeks and I came to the realization that I’m nowhere near ready for a 10K tempo run (non-stop 5:55 minutes/kilometer) as I was last year at the HBC run that came in the midst of summer marathon training. I’m a stronger runner than I was at this time for last year’s Sun Run where …

Skirting the issue

Seeing as I can’t play tennis worth a d*mn and people who wear skirts to play recreational badminton are prissy, my only hope to be so cute while active is to be a skirt-wearing runner chickie.
I had my eye on the New Balance ones [1,2] for the past year. Plus I recently decided I needed black shorts (or something). Plus I was armed with a clinic participants-only 20% off coupon from the Running Room.
So just guess what I’ll be wearing for the HBC run on Saturday….? =D

Lies upon lies

Whoever said running was cool, lied. Thus far, I have been getting along with my camel-pack but warmer weather demands skimpier clothing and the camel-pack straps chafe….. =(
It is finally time to succumb and procure a water belt. The most cost-efficient is the water bottle belt that brings back memories of one particularly uncool boyfriend and besides, I need to carry both water and Gatorade.
Which all leads to… the Fuel Belt. Isn’t it positively ridiculous-looking? This 8-bottle number retails for $51.99 and I think, “Why not?” A 4-bottle version costs …
